Majors In Art

When it comes to art you may think a painter or a sculptor but there is more to it. There are many majors such as Illustration, Graphic Design, and etc.

Illustration

Alice by John Tenniel

Alice by John Tenniel

Is a visualization or a depiction of a subject made by an artist, such as a drawing, sketch, painting, photograph, cinema or other kind of image of things seen, remembered or imagined, using a graphical representation. The aim of an illustration is to elucidate or decorate a story, poem or piece of textual information by providing a visual representation of something described in the text. Illustration takes imagination and makes it reality, through more then just pencil drawings. Source

This is how most rough sketches of cartoons or tv shows are made.

Graphic Design

Smashed Sphere

Is the visual communication, and problem-solving through the correct use of typography, space, image and color. Graphic design seems like it would just involve the computer but that isn’t true, because there are layers of it. This major involves things such as printmaking, basic drawing, painting and etc. Although it doesn’t seem like they are related they are all art and it needs to be known. Source

Artist Playground

When it comes to artwork there are many different things artists use to put their mind on, such as canvas, bristol board, illustration board, and etc.

Canvas

Canvas boards are made of cardboard with canvas stretched over and glued to a cardboard backing, and sealed on the backside. The canvas is typically linen primed for a certain type of paint. They are primarily used by artists for quick studies. Boards range in size and texture. Some canvas boards can be small and smooth, while another can be large and textured.Canvas has become the most common support medium for oil painting, replacing wooden panels. Canvas is a hard thing to work on, this is my own opinion, because depending on what you’re using the work can turn out good or you may have to start over. Source

Paper (Bristol, Drawing, Sketch and etc.)

Bristol is an uncoated, machine-finished paperboard. It is named after the city of Bristol in the southwest of England. Bristol board is commonly used for technical drawing, illustration projects, comic book art, and other two-dimensional art forms. It provides two working surfaces, front and back. This quality separates it from illustration board, which has only a front working surface. The surface texture is either plate or vellum. Plate finish is as smooth as glass, and is very good for pen and ink. Vellum (or kid) finish is a medium texture more appropriate to friction-based media, such as crayon, chalks, or charcoal. A third finish, engravers or wedding, may be used for formal engraved wedding invitations. Source

Drawing Mediums & Tools

When It comes to Drawing there are many things that an artist uses to portray their imagination. Such things like Pencil, colored pencils, crayons, pastels, charcoal both vine and compressed, ink, acrylic or oil paint, and etc. Also the things to fix it like a rubber eraser, plastic eraser, kneaded eraser, artist tape, and etc.

     Pencil

The most common medium for artists is a graphite pencils, that range in value from 4H to 6B. These hardness and softness of the pencil gives different values of gray that go from black to light grey to white. These pencils come either individually or in a case, to save money go for the case but if you just need a few go for individual ones.

There are many forms of charcoal such as compressed and vine and also pencils. Compressed charcoal  is shaped into a block form of a stick that is hard to control, once placed there is no real chance of fixing it. Although Vine charcoal is more durable and flexible being that it is easy to move around or fix. It is a long and thin piece of charcoal stick that is the result of burning sticks or vines in a kiln without air. Charcoal pencils are compressed charcoals that are wrapped with a layer of wood. The design of charcoal pencils are similar to that of graphite pencils while keeping intact with the properties of charcoal. It could be used for primary sketches. Source

    Ink

Ink is a liquid or paste that contains pigments or dyes and is used to color a surface to produce an image, text, or design. Much like compressed charcoal ink is very hard to control or fix once applied. Ink is used for drawing or writing with a pen, brush, or quill.

Ink is mixed with water to create a gray scale that is used throughout the work, giving the work value. If applied correctly the results could be wonders.Source

Basic Drawing

Being that I’m a college student I have had many classes that are Art related, since my major is Graphic Design. Basic Drawing is a required course that you have to take first at my college in order to move onto bigger things. There are many techniques you learn while you move along, these are ones I have learned that really count.

Sketching

The bones of a drawing is made during a sketch, whether it be little or larger then life. Sketching is a way of expressing ideas you have about something and then transforming that into a work of art. Most sketches may be rough but it’s just a sketch let your imagination from your brain connect to the paper. The medium for sketches could be anything like charcoal, ink, and pencil, but mainly pencil is used.

Measuring

It may seem like an ordinary, and obvious thing. Although measuring is a very important thing when you are laying out a work, such as in a perspective drawing, you wouldn’t want your measurements to be wrong because then the whole work is off. T-squares, and rulers are common ones although there is a way i learned that you can measure by using your pencil. Measuring with your pencil may seem weird but it does work. Measurements make the art work.

Craftsmanship

girl_by_sephiroth_art-d8w3ze1.jpg

This is one of the biggest things as an artist you hear all the time. Craftsmanship is how you would approach an artwork, regarding the time you took for that work. An artwork can take a day to do or it can take a year to finish, and the artwork that took longer time to do is much more detail oriented then the one that took a day. This is in the way you would create a line, cut a design, and etc. You as an artist want your work to get to a level of unimaginable fantasy. I wish to get my artwork to this level because I have struggled when it comes to this.

This key idea could determine between what is a “good” artwork and what is an “great” artwork.

I have learned many other techniques but these are the most important ones to me that I know could definitely determine my work. Craftsmanship is huge one that i believe should be taken seriously, as is measuring. Sketching is also important because you never really know how a work will be layed out, or if your idea is something you want to pursue. As I continue to go through these art classes I know I’ll learn more and I can’t wait for that.
